1. How is SCORE Financed?
SCORE has been a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) since 1964. The U.S. Congress, through the SBA, provides SCORE with funds to help operate its national office and local chapters so volunteer counselors can advise entrepreneurs. SCORE also receives contributions in kind and donations from national sponsors and via alliances with leading companies and organizations formed to expand small business outreach, services and resources to communities nationwide. SCORE local chapters are supported by regional sponsors and raise funds in the community to help cover the expenses of running local offices and developing and delivering business materials and services which feature valuable local content and contacts.
2. Do SCORE counselors get paid? What's in it for them?
No. SCORE volunteers have had successful careers in business (large and small) and want to "give back" to the business community. They share a belief that small business owners are more likely to succeed if they have a mentor to guide them. Participation in a local SCORE chapter is a way to help others succed plus make new friends and continue lifelong learning. SCORE volunteers’ primary reward is the personal satisfaction from sharing their expertise and experience with those seeking to start a new business or to improve their existing business.
3. How long do sessions last? Are multiple sessions available?
Each session will last about one hour. There's no limit on mentoring. SCORE counselors are interested in your progress, so follow-on sessions are encouraged. Talk to SCORE again and again. Long term mentoring is a great help. And, specialty experts can help as you request answers to specific questions.
